OSPF intra area filtering
As Scott said - they have to have same database. You can however not have route in the routing table using distribute-list. I.E. it will be in the database on R2, but it won’t appear in the routing table there. With Distribute-list and area range you will not have route on R2 or anywhere else in the network. Note: Dristribute list has local significance in OSPF and alters only local operations (RIB composition - Routing - Redistribution)
